Seven weeks

Seven weeks

I am down to seven weeks left in Hong Kong before leaving for new pastures. I have discovered that there is a giant pile of bureaucracy to get through before I can go. I was unaware that HKU is obliged to withhold my last month’s pay until I can prove that I paid my taxes to IRD. Hong Kong does not have PAYE and you have to pay income tax at the end of the year, obviously they want to make sure that I do not leave without paying so they keep my last month’s pay hostage. Not that I do not have a lot of things to pay for in that month – removers, flight out etc etc! Hong Kong often operates on the assumption that everyone has huge savings and that you can live on them for a while without caring.
